How many of you have had heartburn or indigestion?
I know, I know we all have overindulged on Thanksgiving or another holiday and found ourselves full, bloated, and ending up with heartburn or indigestion.
While that may be an exception, how many of you get heartburn or regurgitation of foods on a weekly basis?
If you do, I hope you aren’t popping antacids that frequently. These can contain heavy metals. I’m serious, pull back the label and read the ingredients. Do you see aluminum? Often times you will and that is not something you want to be ingesting.
Today I want to share with you some healthier alternatives to help quench nasty heartburn and reflux symptoms.
FIRST, let’s discuss ways to prevent heartburn:
You already may be clearly aware that foods high in acid like tomato sauce, spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, and even greasy foods can be difficult to digest.
So…..obviously you can choose to back off on these foods or to eat them in moderation, and chew slowly. Don’t drink lots of water with meals either as that can compromise digestion diluting stomach acid.
Also, if you’ve had your gallbladder removed these fatty and greasy foods may be even more difficult for you to digest as you don’t have the organ, the gallbladder that produces bile to help you digest and absorb your fats.
One solution to this is to take a bile/enzyme/HCL. It might sound gross but can be very helpful. So, you can try taking bile with fatty meals and see if that helps you. This would even include healthy fats like avocados, seeds, nuts, and fish.
SECOND, other healthy foods could be causing reflux:
You may not be aware that even other healthy foods could be causing reflux IF you have food sensitivities to them. Foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, corn, yeast, nuts, or even fructose could be your problem.
So how do you determine this? You have two options. A. an Elimination Diet which I discuss more of in my book Your Longevity Blueprint or B. See a functional medicine provider who can test you to see what foods you should be avoiding.
To sum up, you can try these first two steps out for yourself and see if the heartburn or indigestion improves!
However, if you have heartburn you may benefit from taking some supplements which we will review today:
- PROBIOTICS can add more good bacteria to your gut which can actually reduce irritation to your lining and also improve motility and digestion. My favorite product of ours is our PROBIOTIC COMPLEX with 20 billion CFUs also containing the beneficial yeast Saccharomyces boulardii.
- DIGESTIVE ENZYMES can also help. Our ENZYME SUPPORT is a blend of acid-resistant, plant-based enzymes designed to help maximize the digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. It also has gentian root, a traditional bitter herb, and artichoke, a natural choleretic, added to stimulate the body’s natural production of enzymes and bile.
- HCL levels may also be insufficient. Sometimes, there are symptoms of indigestion which are often mistaken for excessive gastric acid. This leads many to take acid blockers in an attempt to lower stomach acid when the true culprit is likely to be insufficient levels of HCL. The resulting reduction in stomach acidity can lead to impaired protein digestion and mineral breakdown over time, as well as changes in the gut flora and promotion of unwanted bacteria such as H.pylori.
Maintaining adequate levels of HCL is fundamental to healthy protein digestion, nutrient availability, and maintenance of beneficial gastric flora.
Our HCL AND PEPSIN is one of our products that can be taken to increase HCL to improve digestion. It has HCL but also has pepsin which is a well-known enzyme that helps with protein digestion.
4. A BILE/ENZYME/HCL product may also help. We have a combination product called DIGESTIVE SUPPORT. It contains ox bile, pancreatic extract with amylase, lipase, and protease, papain, bromelain as well as some HCL.
The products mentioned above can be used with meals to help prevent heartburn. IF it still happens here are two safer options to quench it:
- DGL-deglycyrrhizinated licorice may help soothe your symptoms. Research has shown DGL to promote bacterial balance and protect the renewal of the intestinal lining. In addition to DGL, our DGL tablet also contains aloe vera, slippery elm bark, and marshmallow root, all used to soothe and relieve minor pain and discomfort in the GI tract. These are chewed after the symptoms present to help reduce heartburn and facilitate digestion.
-
Consider taking our Buffered C product rather than taking heavy metal-laden antacids. It is a metal-free calcium carbonate and magnesium combination.
In summary, if you have heartburn or indigestion there has to be a cause. Is it food sensitivities? Do you need probiotics, enzymes, ox bile or even hydrochloric acid? Check out my video to learn more!
